The cost of education is a real challenge for many families in this very poor maasai village, and in many cases, the children simply do not go to school because the parents cannot pay the fees.
Our Company is sponsoring 15 children, 8 in primary, 7 in secondary, when the need for sponsoring is much more important in Oletukat alone. Sponsoring a kid is an important commitment, and it must be done on several years to really have an impact for the child.
But we also clearly indicate to the children we sponsor, and their teachers, that if their performance decreases, they would be replaced by other possibly brighter and more motivated candidates. We are doing a regular follow up with the teachers and the school’s headmasters.
Tuition program:
We have started a small size tuition program for about 20 kids, age 5 to 7, from the immediate neighborhood. We feed them a lunch and after, we try to improve their swahili, their reading and writing skills, and basic numbers.
It seems to have a positive impact, and could be developed more, without competing with the school itself.
